The article intends to describe the procedure of configuring a Linksys router for internet access for CCNA students or people with similar interest. The instructions compiled here are simple and reliable. However, it is still recommended that users follow them carefully to avoid facing problems. This will eventually save them from looking for online or offline Linksys router support. The below mentioned guide will help you configure internet access on your Linksys router on your own. This essentially means that you save time and money that would otherwise be spent searching for Linksys technical support.
Instructions:
Before beginning with the procedure, you will be required to have a few things handy. These include the router's username and password, username and password and other information provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Close all the windows that are currently opened on your desktop. Launch your internet browser and type '192.168.1.1' (the IP address without quotes and as is) in its address bar. Press the Enter key on the keyboard to proceed.
When asked for login credentials, enter your router's username and password and then click on the OK button. The default password may be 'admin', '1234' or none at all, while the username may be none, 'admin', or 'administrator'. It is, however, recommended that you should check your router documents before assuming and entering anything.
When logged in, navigate to Internet Setup in Basic Setup, the sub tab under the Setup tab. click on the drop down menu next to Encapsulation and choose a protocol for setting up internet connection. Click to select LLC or VC next to the Multiplexing option. Most of the times, Multiplexing is set to default (leave it as is) as per the type of Encapsulation.
Click on the dropdown menu next to QoS and choose the type. Similar to Multiplexing, it shall be selected automatically according to the Encapsulation type. Enter the relevant range numbers in the VPI and VCI boxes. Though the numbers should be filled in automatically by the router, but you can enter them manually. You should contact your ISP for the numbers.
Click to choose type of DSL Modulation from its dropdown menu. This piece of information will also be provided by your ISP. Under PPPoE Settings, Enter the user name and password (from your ISP) in the relevant boxes.
Click to choose either Keep Alive or Connect on Demand. If you select the first option, you will have your internet connected and active all the time. However, the second option will make your internet connection active only when you or someone tries to connect. Besides, it will require configuring the Max idle time (the time period when router remains idle before disconnecting). The default time period is 5 minutes, however you can choose it accordingly.
Though these settings are only optional (mentioned as Optional Settings), you can still configure them if you ISP requires. These include Domain Name, Host Name, or MTU parameters etc. When done, click on the Apply button to let the changes save to the router. Exit the Linksys router's interface and you are good to go.
