Essential Settings That You Need To Configure On Your Wireless Router - Computers - Networks

One of the major concerns that people have setting up home wireless networks is security. For some reason this can actually frightened a lot of people just the mere mention of this. But essentially this can be very easily setup and configure thing to how much knowledge of the subject.

Because there are many different types of wifi routers in the marketplace is quite difficult for us to give an exact picture and details of how to do this. This should not be a major issue because as we have said already this can be quite easily done by observing and possibly having the router manual to hand just in case you need to doublecheck a couple of things.

You first need to connect directly to your router using a network cable you need to do this so you can access the interface to check settings and make some changes. You can normally access the interface using a web browser, if you are unsure how to do this just have a quick look at the manual and it should explain how to connect and then leave you the IP address of the router so you can then bring up the interface on your screen.

As we have said already because of the many different types of routers available this may be slightly different but essentially the information is the same. Once you have entered this section you are looking to find the security settings. If you have been able to find is successfully you may want to change the Network ID or SSID this is basically what your network is going to be called. Change this to a user-friendly name that you will recognize we will explain in a moment what you are doing this.

Also in the security area you need to set the encryption you are doing this so you do not have an open network that anybody can access. One onto standards you will find here is something called WEP if you have been able to find this it will ask you to enter a 10 character password this will consist of numbers and letters 0-9 and A-F. Make sure you make these up quite well as this will make it harder for anybody to guess. Once this has been done you will then need to save the settings and restart your router.

Now hopefully you will be able to connect wirelessly. Disconnect the cable from your laptop and what you are looking for is to view all available wireless networks in your location. Do you remember setting the network ID? you should hopefully now be able to see this from the war is networks in the viewable window if you can double-click on this it will ask you for a password or passphrase this is the 10 character password that you have already set up. Once this has been entered you will then hopefully now be able to connect to your WiFi network over a secure encrypted connection.
