A Review of the Netgear wgr614 Wireless g Router - Computers - Mobile Computing

The netgear wgr614 wireless g router is one of those great, basic little routers that just plain does the job.

There was a time when wireless internet routers were a luxury reserved for office and business networks, but with the laptop revolution having already taken place, it was only a matter of time before wireless internet became a luxury as common as running water and electricity. So, in the name of making wireless internet more accessible, the home routers available are generally capable, secure and easy to install.

The netgear wgr614 wireless g router is not an exception in this regard, but it is exceptional in its performance. Testing showed the router to be more than capable of handling a laptop and a few wireless devices without any noticeable slowdown. If you're a gamer who likes to play one laptop while someone else mans another, you should be able to play just fine without losing any points to lag.

Of course, the netgear wgr614 wireless g router isn't really built for large networks. It has four port capability, but if you push it to the limit, it will start to slow down. However, for large homes or small businesses, it should do just fine for all of your router needs.

In terms of security, the wgr614 has been reported as stellar. We've scoured the message boards and forums, looking to see if any white hat hackers had managed to crack the WEP settings, and we're pleased to report that the wgr614 is uniformly said to be as capable as any other router on the market in that regard.

Installation is easy to the point where, even if you're buying a router for your grandmother, you won't even have to be around to show her how to hook it up. Plug it in, start your browser, and the auto-installation takes care of the rest.

We rank this router a solid A as far as basic home routers go. We don't just mean that it's a good router for the price, either. It's not expensive but it's a very good home router, very capable, secure and fast enough for any price, and it's easy to install and reliable.

Bottom line: If you need a wireless router and can't decide, then you can't go wrong with the wgr614 from Netgear. Luckily, while the router is currently a flagship product for Netgear, the product came out awhile ago, so sales should be very easy to find.
