How to configure the Linksys Logging feature

This tutorial will show you how to configure the routers Logging feature. This includes configuring the router to send logging messages to a Syslog server, and send alerts emails whenever a DoS (Denial of Service) attack occurs. This article is designed for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone looking to setup the Linksys wireless routers logging feature.

The Linksys router allows you to track web traffic generated by your network users. In addition, the Linksys router can detect DoS (Denial of Service) attacks in the direction of your internal computers. You can configure the Linksys router to monitor traffic between your network and the Internet and send you alerts to your email address whenever a DoS attack occurs.

Read the following instructions in order to configure the logging feature:

Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.

Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrators username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password. However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for the password is admin.

Step 3: Click Administration.

Step 4: Click Reporting.

Step 5: Click Enable in order to enable the Linksys logging feature. Otherwise, click Disable.

Step 6: Enter the IP address of your Syslog server in the Syslog IP Address text box.

Step 7: Click Enable in order to enable Email Alerts. Otherwise, click Disable.

Step 8: In the Denial of Service Thresholds text box, enter the number of DoS attacks that should occur before the router send an alert.

Step 9: In the SMTP Mail Server text box, enter the IP address of the SMTP server that the router will use to send alerts emails.

Step 10: In the Email Address for Alert Logs text box, enter the email address that the router will send log messages to it.

Step 11: In the Return Email Address text box, enter the email address that the router will send log messages from it.

Step 12: Click Save Settings.
