Computer Network Topology

When we think about computer networking, the first thing that comes to mind is its design. The network design should, undoubtedly, be clear so that even if the company and its network grow, you dont lose control over everything. This situation can be best avoided by the use of Computer Network Topology. Computer Network Topology offers wide range of advantages. With the use of Network Topology, a backup of router can be formed. It is also of great use in mapping the connection between the devices and in making a switch configuration. This mapping makes the listing of routers and switch modules of a network easy and accurate. Customized Network Topology gives different configuration options to filter the information and get the information of need. The structure of a network, that is Network Topology, is both physical and logical. Physical Topology refers to the design of the networking between cables, location of cable installation and the devices. Logical Topology is about the process of data transfer in accordance with the Physical Topology. Network Topology can also be classified as Historical Topology and Modern Topology. Historical Topology includes Ring Topology, Star Topology & Bus Topology and Modern Network Topology encompasses Hybrid Topology, Point-To-Point, Point-To-Multi-Point and Mesh Topology. Here is discussed these Network Topologies in detail: Bus Topology: In this, a single bus cable is used for connecting the computers, preventing the unnecessary traffic and reflection of the data at the end of the cable. Ring Topology: Central Ring Cable is used for connecting different computers in Ring Topology. google_ad_client = "pub-2311940475806896"; /* 300x250, created 1/6/11 */ google_ad_slot = "0098904308"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; In this, no termination is required and the date flow happens in a circle from one system to another. Star Topology: In this topology, all the computers on a network are connected by a central connection point. This connectivity ensures high fault tolerance, as even if one system is disconnected other systems keep receiving and sending the data uninterrupted. In this manner, it offers advantage over Ring Topology and Bus Topology. Hybrid Topology: Star Topology is made by combining the features of the Historical Topologies like Bus, Star and Ring Topology. Hybrid Topology is about making connection between the physical topology and electronic signaling topology. Mesh Topology: In this, every system is connected directly to every another system, and even if a single system is broken, others in the link are unaffected. It is generally found in wireless networking. Point-to-Point Topology: In this topology, there is no need of switch, router or central hub, as the computers are connected directly. This topology is for both wired and wireless technology. Point-to-Multipoint Topology: There is a master computer in this type of topology that acts as a common source through which other systems on the network are connected. Proper inventory is essential for IT organizations to keep a tab on software installed and hardware functioning. Computer Network Topology Service offered by different companies is of great help in documenting and mapping the connection between the systems and the transfer of data, offering integrated IT solution.
