Setup wireless network using router - Computers - Networks

Most of the laptops, mobiles, game consoles, printers come with ability to connect to wireless network these days. Wireless network can be used to share files, printers, gaming, internet access and for many other things. It provides mobility giving you the freedom of working from anywhere within the range of access point. Installation is also fast and easy and eliminates the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. For your old machines you can get wireless USB adapter so that they can connect to wireless networks. Let's see how you can setup wireless network to access internet .

Requirements:-

a)A broadband (DSL or cable) Internet connection - This internet will be shared by all the connected devices.

b)A wireless router- The router converts the signals coming across your Internet connection into a wireless broadcast.

c)A computer with wireless network adaptor.

Steps:-

a)Turn off your modem and connect the network cable (RJ-45) from modem to router.

b)Turn the modem on. After it connects to the internet, turn on the router.The internet or WLAN light should light up on the router. If everything has worked according to plan till right now that means the router is now connected to modem.

c)Through a network cable connect your router to your computer (you can use the one which connected router to modem temporarily if you don't have second one).

d)Now we will be configuring router settings. Check the documentation that came with router for ip address, username and password. Open web browser, enter the ip address and when promted enter username and password. Leaving all settings to default configure below mentioned things:-

1)SSID-Identifies your network and it appears in a list of available wireless networks.Change it to a unique name to avoid clash of names of different networks.

2)Administrative Password- Controls your network. Will be used if you want to change your routers setting. Make it strong.

3)Wi-Fi Protected Access -Secures your network by setting up a security key, which turns on encryption. Only devices with this key can read the information flowing in the network.

4)Save the settings.

5)Disconnect your computer from router(connect modem to router if you were using that cable).

e)Now that you have established wireless network and configured router you should be able to connect any wireless device to this network.
