Need help resetting password of your Netgear device on your Mac computer? If yes, then the article is for you. You may want to change your password for security reasons or because it has been misplaced or forgotten. Well, whatever the reason is, the problem is there. Don't worry! The below mentioned tips will help you reset your Netgear device's password on your own and without the help of Netgear router support service.

Instructions:

Resetting password when you have access to your existing password:You should make your computer a wired connection (if it is wireless and this is the only computer you have in your house) in order to access the router setup interface. Disconnect the modem if it is connected in between. Directly connect your computer with router using an Ethernet cable. Plug its one end into the computer and run the other end into the back of the router into any of the 4 ports.

When done, ensure that all the desired lights are lit on the router. Open up Safari or other internet browser that you are using. Type (without quotes and as is) in the address bar and hit the Enter key on the keyboard. When prompted for a username and password, enter these and click on the OK button. By default, the username and password for a Netgear router is 'admin' and '1234' respectively (may vary as per router's model) unless you have changed. If you changed them, then enter the changed credentials.

When logged into the interface, click on Set Password under Maintenance on the left hand side panel. Type the existing password in the Old Password box, desired password in the New Password box, and retype it for confirmation in the Retype New Password box. If needed, review your passwords to ensure there is no typing mistake. Click on the Apply button to save the changes. Your password has been changed successfully. You must note it down on a piece of paper for future purposes. You will enter this password next time you will try to login to the router interface. Exit the setup screen. Disconnect the Ethernet cable, reconnect your modem, and make the connection as it was previously.

Resetting password when you have lost or forgotten the existing password:

Unfortunately, it is impossible to recover a forgotten or lost password from the router. If you are unable to log on to your router, then you must hard reset it so as to restore the factory default settings. Disconnect the devices connected to the router. Take a sharp and thin paperclip or pen and push it into the reset button hole located at the back of the device. Press the button, hold it for around 10 seconds, and then release it. Wait until the router completes rebooting.

When done, reconnect the devices like computer and modem and power cycle them. Wait until the devices have fully rebooted. Now open up Safari (the browser), type '' (see above for complete procedure) and hit Enter. When prompted for login credentials, enter default username as well as password (admin, 1234, these may vary as per router model) that came with the router docs. When logged in, reset the password as desired (see above for password reset procedure)

Additional Tips:

You must check your router manual before entering anything as username and/or password. The default user name & password (admin, 1234) may vary according to models. For newer Netgear devices, the username is 'admin' and the password is 'password'. For the older devices, the password becomes '1234'. If you still can't get past the login problem, contact Netgear router support.
