Tips for Choosing Accessible Vehicles

Accessible vehicles are designed with options to allow use by handicapped individuals. Accessibility needs vary from person to person. Some people are able to drive if they equip their vehicle with special options, while others simply need a lift or other device to allow them to be transported with their wheelchair.

Some of the features you may need to consider getting on accessible vehicles include a wheelchair lift, a wheelchair securing device, handicap seating and accessible controls. These devices can be used together or separately to create a vehicle that is accessible for those with disabilities.

When choosing accessible vehicles you may opt for a vehicle that is pre-fitted with all the accessibility options necessary for any handicapped person. This is an expensive option since these vans contain just about every feature available, even some that you may not need. A less expensive alternative is to purchase a van and add the features that you require.

Full size vans and minivans are the two best alternatives for converting to handicap assessable vehicles. Either one makes a good base unit to begin installing accessible features that are necessary. The full size van typically requires less work because of its large size; however, it can be quite expensive. A minivan is easier to drive but may require the entire floor to be lowered to allow wheelchair access.

It may be easiest to acquire a new or used van that has already been converted to an accessible vehicle. You'll have less work to get done, but you'll also pay top dollar for the features. To save money you would be better off purchasing a used vehicle that is either already set up or is ready to be set up with handicap features.

Since everyone has different needs, not everyone requires every possible handicap feature available. Purchasing an accessible vehicle may provide you with some features that you really won't use. Instead you can create the accessible vehicle that better suits your needs by starting with your own van and adding the features you want.

When determining options for accessible vehicles you'll want to choose the latest features possible. Add a wheelchair lift so that the van is easily accessed by the person in the wheelchair. The inside of the van must accommodate the wheelchair by removing some of the seats. Lock the wheelchair in place with special locking devices. Add special handicap driver controls so the van can be driven safely.
