Microsoft Access Applications

Microsoft Access is a rapid application tool used for creating desktop databases. It is a surprisingly powerful tool and allows you to create user friendly easy to use systems. Access has always been better suited for databases which have a small number of users. If you were to plug say 100 users into an Access databases you would be opening yourself up to problems. It is better to keep the number of users to around 10 and if more are needed it may be worth looking at one of the more professional database systems such as SQL Server.

Over the years Access has evolved and become better and stable. There are still problems of course, but compared to earlier versions such as Access 2 it is now a lot better. So what kind of Microsoft Access applications can one create? It really depends on your business need or your imagination. You may require something as simple as a data entry screen to log your CD or DVD collection. You may even require a full blown invoicing system with screens for invoicing, purchasing, customers, orders, delivery etc.

Think in terms of how Access can solve your business need. Is it even the correct tool for the job you have? Perhaps you would be better off using MS Excel. Generally a database is used for storing and retrieving large amounts of information.

Good, innovative Microsoft Access applications will integrate other related components such as Word, Excel and Outlook. For example you could make the database output the daily sales to an Excel spreadsheet which Outlook could then email to another office. Think in terms of an overall solution rather than a dry database application. There is a lot of scope available to an Access database developer.
