The airport's history can be traced back to when it was called Speedway Field, named after the Twin City Speedway race track which was taken over and converted into an airfield. Renamed as the Wold-Chamberlain Field and visited by the likes of Howard Hughes, it had its name changed to Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport in the late 1940's.

Used by Northwest Airlines as its main base in 1926, the airport also served as a base for North Central Airlines. Over the years it has continued to serve as a main base for a variety of airline companies, most of which merged with each other. The two terminals here, the Humphrey Terminal and the Lindbergh Terminal are named after former American Vice President Hubert Humphrey and famous national aviator Charles Lindbergh respectively. Constructed in 1962, the Lindbergh Terminal serves United and Delta airlines as well as all flights to and from international destinations. This impressive structure and airfield has also been used as a movie location including the film 'Airport' shot in 1970.
