Ushuaia, The City At The End Of The World

Ushuaia is an incredible city, largely because it is located at the most southern point of South America which is why its inhabitants and people in Argentina call it the city at the end of the world. The city is almost 150 years old and was founded by Wasti Stirling, a missionary from England. It used to be an Argentinean army base and its history is marked by wars between the country and Chile. The city was erected at the beginning of the XXth century by prisoners held there that were condemned to forced labor. The building where the prisoners were kept is now home to the Police Museum, and other museums such as the Maritime Museum and the Antarctic Museum. The ex-penitentiary history of the place is related to the exhibits you can view in the Penitentiary Museum. The accommodation you can find here is quite reliable, but be aware that the prices can be quite steep since the city is isolated from other regions. The region was inhabited prior to the visit of the English missionary. The archipelago named Tierra del Fuego was then ruled by Yaghan. During those ancient times, the islands included in the archipelago were connected through land bridges to Patagonia which allowed the old inhabitants to hunt and gather roots in order to survive. From Ushuaia you can easily gain access to the national park of Tierra del Fuego which is situated next to the border. Don't be surprised to see many end of the world themed attractions, as the city is more known for its southern location than for anything else. The Beagle Channel is also nearby allowing for boat tours. google_ad_client = "pub-2311940475806896"; /* 300x250, created 1/6/11 */ google_ad_slot = "0098904308"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; You can embark on such a tour from the pier of the city and then be led around the bay while taking in the views of Ushuaia. Attractions that can be seen from the boat include the lighthouse Les Eclaireurs and the islands De los Lobos and De los Pajaros. The marine wildlife is also amazing and you can easily observe it from your boat. Other tours organized inside the city include canoe tours and trekking tours that will take you through the old settlements or to see the penguins living in the area. Ushuaia can be reached by plane. Direct flights can be booked from Buenos Aires or Santiago. If you do not like the idea of traveling by plane, you can travel there by bus, but be prepared for a long journey, since Ushuaia is situated in such a secluded location. Cruise ships also stop often here and passengers can get off the ship to visit some of places inside or around the city hanging at the end of the world.
