Microsoft Project - For Overall Management of a Project

Microsoft Project is a project management software package, designed developed and sold by Microsoft. A project management software package tracks a new project from its start to its end. New projects are part of every business and industry. New projects have a budget allocated to them, have definite start and end dates, and it is the job of the concerned project manager to execute the project without any interference into the existing business and without overrunning the budget. Before the advent of project management software packages, the entire project, its documentation and everything else concerned with the project was handled manually. This gave rise to inefficiencies, loss of time, and loss of money. With the extensive use of project management software, management of projects has become easier and more efficient. Microsoft Project is one such package. It is available in two editions, Standard and Professional. Microsoft Project helps the project manager to develop the complete project plan, track the progress of the project at any point of time, add resources to the project, and maintain budgets. The software is designed to be used by different levels of users and each level of user can be assigned special permissions to view and work with relevant data. However, there are some applications like calendars, tables and filters that can be used by all the users. The package can show the critical path schedule for the project and also display Gantt charts. There are number of third party applications that can be used along with Microsoft Project. For any project, the resource rates and assignment work are keyed in. google_ad_client = "pub-2311940475806896"; /* 300x250, created 1/6/11 */ google_ad_slot = "0098904308"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; With the different tasks enumerated, resources are assigned to respective tasks. The assignment work is estimated. Then the project cost is calculated, which is rate times the work. Each resource is equipped with a calendar that specifies the exact time period for which a resource is available. Resources can also be assigned to multiple tasks. The resources can be assigned to multiple plans as well. The capabilities of Microsoft Project were extended with the release of Microsoft Office Project Server and the Microsoft Project Web Access. The Project Server software stores all the project data in a central SQL Server database. A project administrator assigns permissions for the use of various data. Web Access helps the project administrator assign jobs to various members of the project team. Project Server supports electronic communication over the web via Web Access.
