Configure Internet access on Linksys Router For CCNA

This article will show you how to setup and share Internet connection on a Linksys Router in order to connect your computers to the Internet and enable file sharing for host located on your home/office network. You will learn how to setup Internet connection through PPPoEthernet.
This article is designed for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone looking to do basic Linksys router setup. It falls under the CCNA syllabus's objective "Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN".
The following steps describe how to configure Internet connection:
Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.
Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrator's username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password. However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for t he password is admin. Step 3: In the Encapsulation field, select the protocol used to establish Internet connection.
Step 4: Select the Multiplexing type. In most cases, this parameter is set automatically.
Step 5: Select the QoS type. Like the Multiplexing field, this parameter is set automatically based on the encapsulation type.
Step 6: Configure the VPI/VCI parameters. To do this, you can either let the Linksys router detects their values automatically, or you can set them manually yourself using the values supplied by your ISP (Internet service Provider).
Step 7: Select the DSL Modulation type. Your ISP supplies this information.
Step 8: In the username/password text boxes, enter your Internet account credentials (username and password).
Step 9: At this step of the configuration process, you have to choose one from these two options:
? Connect on Demand: Selecting this option instructs the router to establish Internet Connection whenever a user on your home network tries to access the Internet. Additionally, you have to configure the Max Idle Time (amount of time the router will wait before disconnecting from the Internet if no user requests Internet within that period. The default value is 5 minutes).
? Keep Alive: Select this option if you want your Internet connection is up all the time. The router will check its connectivity to the Internet every Redial Period interval time. The default Redial Period is 30. If your Internet connection is down for whatsoever reason, the router will reestablish it automatically.
Step 10: this is optional, but some ISPs still require the configuration of the hostname, domain name, and MTU parameters. So, enter your hostname and domain name in the Hostname and Domain Name fields respectively. In addition, select auto in the MTU drop-down list in order to detect the MTU size automatically. Otherwise, you can enter this value manually after you select manual instead of auto in the MTU d rop-down list.
