What to consider when buying a wireless router - Computers - Hardware

A wireless router is an essential piece of equipment when wanting to set up a wireless computer network. A wireless router is simply a router that includes the function of a wireless access port and a network switch. This allows the user to access the internet or computer network wirelessly.

Depending on where and what you are going to be a wireless router for, there will be different attributes you will need. For example, if you are going to be using it to download/transfer large files as quickly as possible, you will be wanting the fastest wireless router available. Similarly, if you only have 1 or 2 occasional users in a small space and only need it for browsing the internet and checking emails, you are not going to need a super fast, expensive wireless router.

Here are a few things that I would consider when buying a wireless router:- The speed rating.- How reputable the brand is.- How easy it is to set up.- What after sales services is available (ie a free help service)- Does it come with a warranty?- What does it look like? (if it is going to be on show, you want it to look nice!)- And last but not least price. (no need to spend more than you need)

It may also be beneficial to take a look at a manufacturers older versions/models from the previous year. For example, last years model may not be as high tech and flashy as the current model, but you will also find that the price is much cheaper. If you do not need your router to be the most up to date, fastest router, you may be able to find a good deal like this. Make sure you check that all warranties are still active when purchasing an earlier model.

I always find it useful to read reviews from customers that have actually purchased the wireless router. This way it is easy to get an accurate representation of the product and whether it will be suitable for you.
