A problem with wireless router reviews, we find, is that it can be difficult to find reviews without bias. How many times have you been reading a tech magazine, you browse through a glowing review of a certain new product, and then you turn the page and see a two page spread advertising the product?
Online wireless router reviews should be a little more reliable, but you also run into several reviews accompanied by banner ads for the very product being reviewed.
We don't mean to paint the whole thing in too negative a light. The truth is that, no matter what the reviews say, word of mouth will always kill a bad product. However, the fact remains that a publication such as a magazine or a review website typically relies on advertiser money to keep afloat, and a negative review can jeopardize good business relations between a manufacturer and the publication.
There are honest reviews out there, to be sure, and even these reviews that seem biased are still based in truth, but obviously, if your biggest sponsor is putting out a new product this month, you're likely to gloss over the product's faults while hyping up the positive aspects of the new release.
Here, our only interest is the reader. We're not getting any sponsorship deals from linksys wireless, netgear or belkin, and we're free to tell you exactly what's what when it comes to wireless routers, cross referencing our own take with other unbiased reviews, message board posts and opinions on the products in order to make sure that we're covering every product from every relevant angle.
So when we list the best wireless routers, we're not listing "The best routers we're getting paid to hype", rather, we're listing the wireless routers we deem to be the best, most capable and most secure routers on the market.
You will see us list companies like Belkin in several reviews, because Belkin is one of the more visible and significant companies producing wireless routers today, however, we also pride ourselves on giving every product we review a fair shake. Just because Belkin produces great products doesn't mean that every product they produce is great.
There are some great product review sites on the internet, but for an unbiased report, we always recommend checking out message boards and user forums regarding certain products (in fact, we often check such sites in order to gain a different perspective for our reviews). A paid reviewer's job is on the line if he prints a negative review, but a message board user is free to say anything without reprisal.
