The Wireless Router; Gateway To The Internet - Technology

A router is fundamentally an access point to the internet for computer equipment and a number of different electrical devices. Routers come in both wired and wireless forms, although the latter is far more prevalent in homes. Many companies manufacture wireless routers for the home; giving residents the chance to connect their devices to the information resource that is the internet.

Wireless routers all perform the same functions. Essentially they convert broadband connections and broadcast signals around a local area. The wireless functionality works in the same way as a cordless telephone. The connection to the telephone socket is broadcasted around the house or flat and is then identified by wireless devices including laptops and games consoles. In many cases a wireless router is included as part of a broadband package, which incorporates a monthly payment scheme.

Wireless routers have a number of functions. Those from BT, Netgear, Thompson and Alcatel will all provide wireless access to the internet for computers, laptops and a number of wireless enabled gaming devices. Some of these routers may even allow VoIP calls to be made. Many even allow for digital television broadcasting and a range of on demand services.

While the different routers from BT, Thompson, Alcatel and Netgear differ in price they carry out similar functions. The difference occurs in the range and strength of the signal broadcasted. In many cases this difference can be negligible although it is something worth bearing in mind if a home is extremely large, or spread over a number of different floors. Ideally, placing the router in the centre of the house will result in the widest access for all residents.

The choice of router is pretty much down to personal preference, style plays a large part in the decision as items can be bought that are ultimately stylish and form part of a modern, chic technological set up. That said, many people choose to hide their router away and hence to some, the importance of style is not as great. With such a wide range of routers on the market it can be difficult for people to choose. The most advisable course of action is to study the market options and then make an informed decision based upon the needs of a network and family.

Today the demands placed on routers are great. Someone may be streaming on demand televisions broadcasts while another may be on their laptop; in addition someone may be playing video games over the internet. Hence a router that can fulfil its requirements is now an essential part of home life.
