A router is another computer networking device. Its basic use is it interconnects two or more computer networks. It also forwards data packets along networks.
Because of different physical types of network, it can have many interface connections. However routers can analyze the data being sent over a network, change how it is packaged and send it to another network or over a different type of network.
It uses headers and forwarding tables to help in determining the best path for forwarding the packets. It also uses ICMP protocols to communicate with each other and configure the best route between any two hosts.
A router can use the information of creating or maintaining a table of the available routes and their conditions along with the distance and cost algorithms to determine the best route for a given packet. It is typical for a packet to travel through a number of network points with routers before arriving at its destination.
It is true that even if a home or a business has only one computer, it uses a router because it helps in protecting the firewall. It provides a better protection against hacking that commonly used software firewall, because no computer Internet Protocol address are directly exposed to the internet. It is basically impossible to make a port scan which is a technique in exploring weaknesses. A router also does not consume resources.
It is easy to install or connect on your internet modem. It is available for hard wired or wireless networks and its price is reasonably enough for you to buy and have one.
Router is also the answer if you have more than one computer or any Wi-Fi enabled device in your place. It gives you the ability to be connected to the internet together at the same time.
