8 Easy steps to connect your Laptop with a Wi-Fi Router - Computers - Hardware

If you are using a laptop and want to get it connected to the wireless router of your home or office in order to enjoy the better mobility, you can do it yourself by following certain easy steps if you possess a fair knowledge of configuring a computer. By connecting your Laptop via Wi-Fi router, you can easily avoid the wire clutters and easy access the internet and other network resources wirelessly. The following steps should enable your Laptop with the wireless router connectivity.

1. Refer to the wireless router manual to install the router and connect it to the Internet.

2. Setup a wireless client with the help of SSID (service set identifier), WEP (wireless encryption protocol) key and channel & mode.

3. Reboot the laptop and setup the drivers needed for the Wi-Fi card by inserting the driver disk and following on-screen setup process.

4. Once you installed the driver, open the Wi-Fi icon from the desktop or from "My Network Places" and then click "Properties".

5. Select the tab named "Wireless Networks".

6. Use the "add" button present at the bottom if the Wi-Fi network is not shown under "Available Networks".

7. You can now see the SSID of your network under "Available Networks" section. Now click "Configure".

8. Here you need to enter the network's SSID with the WEP key

Once you finish with the above procedures, click "Start ? Connect to ? Wireless Network connection". Your laptop is now ready to access the wireless network provided by your Wi-Fi router and enjoy its astonishing benefits. But before using the connection you need to keep certain things in mind. First of all you need to make sure there is a firewall installed on your laptop along with updated antivirus as open wireless network is not safe for your computer. If you are using windows XP, you need to have a SP3 (Service pack 3) to get the latest security drivers. Some of the wireless networks have a hidden network name (SSID) which needs to be obtained by the IT people of your organization or the tech support person. If it got connected to the network but not able to access the Internet, set your wireless network adapter to obtain the IP address automatically from the wireless router. In case there is a problem and you could not complete the installation process or the laptop has some problems due to which it could not get connected, you can reach an online tech support to get your problems solved by an online technician.
