Configure MAC Address Clone on Linksys Router For CCNA

This article will show you how to setup the MAC Address Clone feature on a Linksys router in order to send the old routers MAC address to your ISP, instead of the new one. This article is designed for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone looking to use MAC Address Clone feature on a Linksys wireless router. This article falls under the CCNA syllabuss objective Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN.

A MAC address is 12 figures string that identifies a network adapter. Therefore, you cannot find two network adapters with the same MAC address. Most Internet Sevice Providers (ISPs) requires their clients to supply their usernames and passwords in order to the Internet. However, some of ISPs require additional information, which is the routers MAC address (this MAC address must be registered with your ISP). If you change your router, then the routers MAC address changes. Therefore, you should register the new routers MAC address with your ISP. However, you can avoid this using the Linksys router because it has a built-in feature called MAC Address Clone. This feature allows you to send the old routers MAC address to your ISP, instead of the new one. Thus, you do not need to re-register the new routers MAC address with your ISP.

Read the following instructions in order to configure the MAC Address Clone feature:

Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.

Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrators username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password. However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for the password is admin.

Step 4: Click MAC Address Clone.

Step 5: Click Enable in order to activate the MAC Address Clone feature. Otherwise, click Disable.

Step 6: In the User Defined Entry field, enter the MAC address registered with you ISP.

Step 7: Click Clone Your PCs MAC Address.

Step 8: Click Save Settings.
