Great Conveniences of Wireless Routers - Technology

Wireless Routers are computer network routers which enable wireless connection using WiFi (wireless fidelity) either between computers or from a network of computers to the Internet. It functions in a similar manner as a standard network switch. In fact most wireless routers also have multiple LAN (Local Area Network) ports to accommodate wired connection as well, which makes it also known as a WLAN or Wireless Local Area Network.. It has the standard WAN (Wide Area Network) port which enables the device to connect to the Internet either directly or through another external destination/device and antennae to detect and allow access to and distribute Internet connection to other wireless devices.

Wireless routers have greatly extended Internet mobility. It has become an indispensable auxiliary tool for mobile devices which feature internet access ability, from portable music players and game consoles to mobile phones and laptop computers. WLAN, although promising good connection strength, will not maintain as much connection security and stability as that of wired connection. So to check for connection stability and function in a glance, your wireless router should indicate the following:

Power Indicator must turn on. For most WLAN routers, a steady green LED light indicates power input.

Wireless Transmission indicator turns green when a wireless device is detected and flashes/blinks in a rapid, unpredictable pulse when data transfer is active.

Ethernet Transmission indicator turns green when a Network cable is correctly plugged into the router from a computer and flashes/blinks in a rapid, unpredictable pulse when data transfer is active.

Internet Indicator turns green when Internet connection is established by the router. The indicator turns red if Internet connection fails or gets disconnected.

When a WLAN is set up, any device which has wireless internet connection ability will be able to connect to the router. To limit access to the router, security must be set. A WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) key must be created to allow access to the router exclusively to devices which carry the WEP key. However, WEP key cracking software has recently made WEP key decoding possible so the WPA (WiFi Protected Access) was designed. The WPA functions in the same way the WEP key does. WPA uses a different and stronger encryption, making it harder to crack yet is easier to set up, which makes the WPA a more preferable method of limiting WLAN access.

Wireless Routers carry the best of both the wired and wireless worlds, making the WLAN the best option for setting up computer networks either at home or at work.
