Your Choices in a Wheelchair Accessible Van - Health - Disabilities

If you use a wheelchair or motorized scooter, you may feel that your options in a wheelchair accessible van are limited. Before resigning yourself to a plain, bulky, and utilitarian vehicle, however, you need to make a point of visiting a dealer specializing in handicapped vans and minivans.

Why? The modern wheelchair accessible van is not just functional but is also very stylish and comfortable. The best thing about a contemporary wheelchair accessible van is the fact that it is also remarkably safe and convenient to use as well. This means that they are among the most high-tech forms of transportation, and yet this is a fantastic benefit to the driver or passenger who uses a wheelchair, scooter, or walker.

This is because, normally, someone who wants to be able to drive their own wheelchair accessible van may have to wrestle with a transfer from their chair and into the drivers seat. While this is something that can be mastered with practice, it is never totally safe and is always a bit of an inconvenience especially if the driver is on their own at the time.

A modern van, however, can be designed and equipped with the gear that makes the need for a transfer totally obsolete. This is because the vans can come equipped with easy to use electronic ramps that descend and fold up on command, extra wide sliding doors to accommodate any model of wheelchair or scooter, and removable seats that can allow for the maximum amount of floor space and mobility inside of the cab.

Of course being able to drive or push a wheelchair or scooter inside of the van is nice, but how can it be safe? The best models are fully equipped with the straps and security devices necessary to truly lock the chair into position. This means that someone in a wheelchair could use the exterior equipment to get themselves into and out of the van, and then just steer themselves into position in front of the vehicles command center. They would then buckle and strap themselves securely into position before heading out for a day of shopping or to some sort of gathering or activity.

The interior spaces are also larger thanks to floors that have been dropped towards the ground and roofs that have been bumped up a bit to allow passengers to stand up and move about the cabin freely!
