The device that can connect two or more computers under one network is called a router. The router has many facets and it can facilitate many functions all at once. The routers are commonly used to connect one computer to another in a smaller set up like in a small office or in a home. The typical router makes use of the NAT or the network address translation which can tell the right way where the packet of data should go. The most essential function of the router in a network is that it acts as the network's main gateway to the Internet. 1. The first step on how to install a router is ensuring that the computers you plan to connect together have the Ethernet card or the local area network card. This card allows the computers to share files together. Most of the laptops and computers made over the past few years already have LAN cards installed in them. If your computer doesn't have the card you can always buy one and install it yourself or ask a computer technician to install it for you.

2. The second step on how to install a router is connecting the cable of the ISP or the Internet Service Provider to the router's port for the Internet. If your connection is DSL then the cable for the input is the line of the telephone. The cable should be attached to the router's port for the DSL. Another way to connect the router is to have a thick cable called the CAT6.

3. The third step on how to install a router is taking the Ethernet cables and plugging them to the router's ports for the Ethernet. It is important for you to remember that two ports are needed so two computers or laptops can use just one Internet connection. If your router has a single port for the Ethernet then you will need to purchase a hub where the router will be connected. The hub will also have ports where the computers shall also be linked.

4. The fourth step on how to install a router is switching it on so it can start working.

5. The fifth step on how to install a router is reading the manual of the router thoroughly. The router should be configured at this point which you will learn from reading its manual. The configuration procedure depends on the router's brand. You should configure it so the computers or laptops can have Internet connection.
